🏛️ Overview

Dhamek Stupa is a massive, solid cylindrical structure located in Sarnath, about 10 km from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist monuments in India, marking the spot where Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. This event is known as the “Dharmachakra Pravartan” or "Turning of the Wheel of Dharma".


📜 Historical Background

  • Built originally in 249 BCE by Emperor Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty, who was a great patron of Buddhism.

  • The present structure dates to around 500 CE, as the original Ashokan stupa was rebuilt and enlarged.

  • The word "Dhamek" is believed to have been derived from “Dharma”.

  • The Dhamek Stupa is an impressive cylindrical tower made of stone and bricks.

  • The upper part is made of plain brickwork.

  • It marks the site of the first teaching of the Buddha on the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.

    1. Lumbini – birthplace

    2. Bodh Gaya – enlightenment

    3. Sarnath – first sermon

    4. Kushinagar – death (Mahaparinirvana)

  • Archaeological excavations in Sarnath revealed:

    • Remains of ancient monasteries and temples.

    • Ashokan Pillar with inscriptions and the famous Lion Capital, which is now the National Emblem of India.

    • Various inscriptions and relics dating back to the Gupta period (4th–6th century CE).
