🛕 Introduction

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, located in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), is one of the most sacred and ancient Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, also known as Vishwanath or "Lord of the Universe". Situated on the western bank of the holy river Ganga, it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are the holiest Shiva temples in India.

📜 Historical Background

• The temple has been mentioned in ancient scriptures like the Skanda Purana, Kashi Khanda, and other Vedic texts.

• The original temple was said to have been built in ancient times, but it has faced multiple invasions and destructions over centuries.

• The current structure was rebuilt in 1780 by Ahilyabai Holkar, the Maratha Queen of Indore.

• In 1669, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb demolished the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque over the ruins. The sacred Gyanvapi Well, which still exists, is believed to contain the original Shiva Lingam hidden to protect it from destruction.

• Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2021, transformed the temple area by:

  • Creating a direct path from the temple to the Ganga river (Dashashwamedh Ghat).

  • Expanding the complex to over 5 lakh square feet.

  • Adding facilities like waiting halls, shops, Vedic centers, museums, and viewing galleries.

  • Restoring the spiritual, cultural, and architectural legacy of Kashi.

• The corridor connects over 23 heritage structures, previously hidden in congested lanes.
